[00:00:00] Welcome back to another episode of Success in Mind. Yesterday was the Super Bowl, and that means only one thing on this show. It is time for our annual Teri uses a Sports Metaphor episode of Success in Mind, and today is gonna be just that. So let's go.
Now, I haven't always been a sports fan. In fact, if you've been listening to me for a while, then you've probably heard me talk about this before, that I am not a big sports fan, or I haven't been in the past. I guess it'd be fair to say that I'm still not a big sports fan, but I'm definitely more appreciative of sports and after 19 and a half years with my husband who is a sports guy, I've learned some things and I've come to appreciate certain sports.
[00:01:00] Starting with hockey, and then he got me interested in football because he explained, well, the way he explained football to me is how strategic it is. And as someone who works with business owners and loves business, I love a good strategy. So I can totally appreciate the strategy that goes into football.
I don't think he'll ever get me on board with basketball or baseball, though I am sorry. I just find them really boring. But football, I can appreciate now and, and I actually look forward to watching a football game now, which if you asked me 19 and a half years ago, I would say there is no way I'll ever enjoy that sport.
It makes no sense. And today I would say it makes a little more sense. Uh. A little more sense. I'm still figuring it out. I'm still learning. So I'm by no means am I a football expert at this point, but I do really love a good sports story and a good sports metaphor. So let's talk about yesterday's game.
And [00:02:00] again, I'm talking about this as someone who is not by any means an expert in any of this. So this is, this is from my raw, unfiltered understanding. Football and a game yesterday, and also from Greg's, explanations of the game. So what did we see yesterday for those of you who watched the game? And by the way, if you didn't watch the game, there's still stuff in this episode for you, so keep listening.
Anyway, I promise I have a point to all of this rambling. So we're watching the game yesterday and we were cheering for the chiefs. It was tough though, because I also really liked the Forty-Niners, and I love the history of the Forty-Niners, but we, we were, we were cheering for the Chiefs, not just because of Taylor Swift, but because I really liked the team and so does my husband.
He really likes the team and we really like Mahomes, so we're cheering for the Chiefs and the first half of the game, it was, it was, it was not good for the chiefs. It [00:03:00] was not going their way and. I kept waiting for them to turn it around and turn it around, and Greg kept saying like, come on, Mahomes, come on you.
You can do this. You've got this. And he was looking for the Mahomes magic, is what he was calling it. He's like, we, we need that Mahomes magic. And I'm like, well, what, what are you talking about? What do you expect him to do? And he said, well, he could run, like one of the great things about Mahomes is he can run, and I don't know why he's not running the ball when he has an opportunity, if he doesn't have a clear pass, like just run, just start running.
But he is not doing it. And so he started speculating and I thought, well, maybe he's injured and he can't run. Um. But then, you know, he, he did run at one point, so we're like, okay, he's not, he's not hurt. He's, he's able to do it. And I was like, maybe he's sick. Maybe he's like weak right now, but, and they needed him to play, I don't know.
And we're trying to figure out like, what was going on? Why isn't he playing the way he normally plays? And they were making mistakes that isn't typical of this [00:04:00] team, and it's not typical of my homes to make these mistakes. And so there are mistakes being made and it was tense. And then. They come back after halftime and I was like, okay, maybe now they're gonna turn it around.
And things started to go more in their favor. And for those of you who watched the game, it was, it was intense. It was right up to the end. They went into overtime. I have never seen a football game go into overtime. I haven't watched that many football games though, so keep that in mind. But of the ones I've seen, I have yet to see one go into overtime.
So it was very exciting to watch, but. The team changed in the second half and they started to really play differently. And Greg kept saying, yes, this is the Mahomes. We know this is the Mahomes. We know this is the Mahomes magic we've been waiting for. This is how he needs to play this game. And as we were talking about it, well, something you need to know about my husband is that he is a coach.
He coached at a very high level of lacrosse and he played [00:05:00] semi-professional lacrosse. And so he is like, he knows how to coach guys and. He was explaining to me how he's like, you know, they've, they've already made all their mistakes. They've already made their mistakes, and so now they can just play. I said, well, what do you mean they've made their mistakes?
And he said, well, they, they made their mistakes in the first half. Now they're gonna play. No team is ever gonna play a perfect game. There's always gonna be mistakes. And it's their ability to recover from it and to stay focused on what they're doing that's gonna make the difference here. And I said, well, what about the other team?
And he said, well, they haven't made mistakes yet, so they're gonna start making mistakes because they haven't had any mistakes. Just watch. And sure enough, the Forty-Niners started to make mistakes and the chiefs. Started to play like the Chiefs that we have come to know and love. And it was interesting to me because here's where I started drawing the parallels to business, is that we have to make the mistakes.
You're never going to [00:06:00] play a perfect game in business, and as long as we avoid making those mistakes, we're not playing any game at all. So you need to risk making the mistakes and allow yourself to make the mistakes, get them outta the way because they're going to happen. So let yourself. Make the mistakes, let it happen.
There's Dutch Barking. He's agreeing with me right now. He's like, yes, guys. Make the mistakes. Make the mistakes. Risk failing. It's okay, because once you get those mistakes outta the way, then you can start to really play and really improve, but you can't improve and you can't learn until you make those mistakes and allow yourself to make them.
My husband's a pretty smart guy. I think he is. Anyway, uh, I don't think he ever listens to this podcast though, which is probably because I get nervous if he listens, so I don't know if he'll ever hear this. But anyway, he's a pretty smart guy when it comes to this stuff. He knows what he's talking about, and it made sense to me that, yeah, you're never gonna play [00:07:00] a perfect game.
And he, I said, how do you know this? And he said, well, this is how I used to coach my teams. It's like, you're never gonna be perfect. You're gonna make the mistakes and we just need to learn how to recover. You just have to recover from those mistakes and you keep going. And then he said to me at one point during the game when it was like really tense and I wasn't sure if the chiefs were gonna do it.
He said, no, they're gonna win. Greatness always rises. I was like, what? What did you just say? And he's like, greatness always rises. And then sure enough they won. And I loved that. I was like, I'm gonna remember that greatness always rises. So. That's what you need to lean on when you're in business, when you're struggling, when you're making those mistakes, it's remembering why you got into business.
Remembering what your strengths are and your talents and your abilities. That's what's gonna get you through it. Greatness always rises. You're not gonna be kept [00:08:00] down from doing the thing that you are meant to be doing here on this planet. So that's my little sports metaphor for this year. Take it, leave it, whatever you wanna do with it.
I like it. I appreciate it. It makes sense to me that we need to just get those mistakes outta the way and trust that we can get through them. Know that you will make mistakes, but you also have the tools, the strength and the resources to overcome them to learn, improve, and grow. And the only way you get there is by going through the mistakes and the challenges.
So I hope you enjoyed this episode today. It's a bit of a shorter one.
Come back next week. Next week. I'm interviewing Brain Coach Dee on the show. You are going to want to listen to this episode. I actually recorded it this morning with her. Uh, she's phenomenal. You're going to love her energy. And she talks all about. Why you need sleep. Even if you're one of those people that says, I can do just fine on three or four [00:09:00] hours of sleep.
No, you can't. And she will explain why on the show. Um, she'll make you rethink your sleep patterns, and she talks about how to optimize your brain for success. So you do not wanna miss it. It's an excellent episode. I'm super excited to share it with you guys. I hope you have an amazing day, a fantastic week, and I look forward to being back with you again.
